Flying Black Ant

When you’re fishing mountain lakes for trout or prospecting a pond for bluegill, keep your eye open for ants. On windy days, the bugs are blown out of trees and shoreside grass to waiting fish.

You should be watching for flying ants, because you can bet the fish are. If fish are rising along the shore and no apparent hatch is in evidence, tie on an ant pattern and move your boat or float tube within range. Let it drift or impart a little action as if its wings are fluttering.
